A total of logs from two species, red oak (Quercus rubra) and yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulip(/era), were measured in five typical hardwood sawmills across West Virginia to evaluate log sawing practices and lumber recovery. Log characteristics such as length, diameter, sweep, taper, and ellipticality were measured in sawmills, while log. Finding a reliable source for timber can be challenging. For the most part, finding logs for sale requires building relationships with timber suppliers, whether they are logging companies, other sawmills, tree services, reclamation companies or log salvage operations.

Large, commercial mills typically saw for the highest grade of boards. This procedure involves rotating the log to a new “clean” face after a few cuts. The drawback to this method is that it creates a stack of narrow boards (drawing 1). Instead, I use a method referred to as sawing “through-and-through” (drawing 2). The preferred sawing pattern for small hardwood logs is one that balances the growth stresses as the log is milled and maximises the proportion of quartersawn timber. The sawing pattern presented is a method that can be only used on a mill that allows you to cut through the full width of the log and rotate the log a number of times during the.
